Ghost Bikes
The series “Ghost Bikes” simply put, is look at the remembrance monuments of the deaths of bicycle riders by their friends & fellow riders. These private makers are almost a folk art installations to warn others of the dangers that sharing the road with traffic that in some cases just does not pay enough attention to the others that they share the road with.
This project is one of my other bodies of work that has been of interest to me, those explore the use of flash photography. This stark illumination of the subject makes it appear magically out of the darkness to reveal it’s self in a way that is unique to photography. I personally like the way the darkness surrounding the bikes reflects the sadness of the tragedy that they represent. The flash also isolates the subject from the surrounding distractions.
This project is a constant search to not only find this memorials the first place. There is no real recording of the locations, but to document them before for some reason, the local residence remove them.
